Why I will never use an online streaming service
Netflix has just announced that you have less than 30 days left to watch any of Joss Whedon’s shows before they are pulled from their instant viewing service. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and the first season of Dollhouse will all be gone April 1st.
If a company wants my business, they need to keep their catalog of movies and TV shows and not randomly pull them from viewing. I own all the shows that I want on DVD with many of them backed up on hard drives. I can watch them whenever I want without fear that they are going to one day disappear.
By removing older shows, the only way new viewers can be obtained is via piracy. No one is going to go out and purchase seven seasons of a TV show that they have never seen before. They are, however, willing to check it out via a legal, streaming service that they already pay for.
There is also speculation that, since Firely is coming to The Science Channel, it is being pulled because new viewers mean new DVD purchasers. We don’t really know since Netflix isn’t saying much at the moment.
If you haven’t seen Firefly, let me kick you hard. Then, watch it on Netflix instant or come over to my house. I’m always up for rewatching the series.
